Thanksgiving is a religious holiday.
In 1789, during the first year of his presidency, George Washington declaired Thursday, November 26th as a "Day of Public Thanksgiving and Prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God"
Washington wanted Thanksgiving to be a national day of prayer, reflection, and blessing. In his Thanksgiving Day proclamation, Washington called for all Americans to "unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions."
